Type Safari in Dalston- SignageThis is

Last week, we saw the city of London through typography. On a two hour type safari, we walked around and snapped some pictures of our favourite signs to study and compare the different styles and designs. I noticed that nearly all of the pictures I took along the safari are composed of all capital letters. Personally, I enjoy the clean, classy look of the sans serif all capital words. Some of the more intricate signs included hand lettering with chalk or paint. I had a lot of fun finding different letters to spell out my favourite saying "Walking on Sunshine" for my type project. The sign on the front door- the style of letters and also the location of the sign- is what I noticed to be a fair determinant in whether or not I go in and check out the store/restaurant. We were told by our tour guide that Dalston took over the Shoreditch reputation of being the "artsy college town"- it used to be Shoreditch until it got too pricy for young students. This was definitely reflected through the signage. There were so many light up, bright, hipster letterings that really drew in my attention when I walked by; made me feel like I just HAD to get a picture. Here are some of the signs that we saw during our safari.

Next time you visit a new city I'd suggest taking an hour and going on a type hunt, it's actually really entertaining and you might find some inspiration for business cards or any other design project your working on.

Thanks for reading, y'all! :)

eat here.

Goat cheese, brie, fig jam, candied beets, roasted peppers,
and kale pesto on toasted focaccia at Beyond Retro.

Caffè Latte that was almost too pretty to drink
but we still drank it. Actually, Ross drank it I just
borrowed it for the sake of a picture.

Hand painted letters, hard to tell from the picture
but in person you can actually see the paint strokes, which was
really neat.

This was my favorite sign I saw that day. I liked the white sans serif up
against the chalk board. Once again all caps.

Some modern typeface for a healthy juice shop.

Happy 30th, Matt, you have your own movie board.

I just liked that it said tipsy

They're REALLY into Turkish food here,
